The Job Outlook in Culinary Arts

We will always need cooks. Stating the obvious, no matter where we travel, we do have to eat. Businesses hire chefs, but so do private families, as well as tourist resorts. This means that employment for chefs will be plentiful. We are seeing a rise in the trend to eat out and away from home.

While we are seeing more restaurants and restaurant positions opening, we are also seeing more competition for those positions.

 

Just as in any other kind of job, the amount that you are paid will vary dramatically. According to the Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics the salaries for chefs will vary dramatically. The salary that you will make depends on the kind of restaurant that you will work with. The location of your job will also determine how much you may be paid. Resorts and high-end restaurants will pay a great deal more than the normal cafe, as you might imagine.

 

That being said, even the higher end restaurants are trending toward paying salaries that are considered mid-level. You probably will not get rich from most executive chef positions. They will keep you comfortable, unless you are in a very lucrative position. Your salary will typically be mid range, with about fifty percent of chefs today earning close to 35K. While some salaries will rise as high as 55,000 for a sous chef, others will range as low as 23,000 per year.

 

Your salary may range dramatically according to geographic location, such as 65 thousand per year in Arizona, vs.. 100 thousand per year in NYC. Depending on the quality of the restaurant and the kind of food they serve, you may make more or less money for your position. Different types of chefs will also be paid differently according to their skill and their responsibility.

 

The competition for jobs in this field is reportedly growing very dramatically even while the jobs are projected to rise as well. The people who have the best formal cooking class training will get the best jobs. The best jobs will go to those who have formal training as well as some level of experience. To have better job prospects and a higher salary, good culinary schools are going to be necessary.
